Grizedale Reservoir

The water at Grizedale Reservoir sits dark and still, ringed by moorland that feels properly remote despite being just outside Garstang. This is a working water supply, not a leisure lake with beach clubs and jet skis - which is precisely why it works so well. You come here to walk, to breathe, and if you're lucky, to spot something interesting through binoculars.

The reservoir itself is the main draw. A circuit around it takes a decent couple of hours at a leisurely pace, with decent paths on most sections. The landscape is bleak in the best possible way - open fells, rough grass, the occasional stand of conifers. Birdwatchers rate it highly. You'll see wigeon and teal in winter, and the usual upland species year-round. Families who enjoy a straightforward walk will find it rewarding without being taxing, though there's not much to entertain the restless-five-year-old once you're away from the water's edge.

If you're based at Claylands Caravan Park or Orchard Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. The weather matters here more than most places - come on a grey day and it's atmospheric; come in persistent drizzle and you'll wonder why you bothered. Summer weekends can feel busy for what is, after all, just a walk around a reservoir.
