Grimsditch Wood

Ancient woodland just outside Saffron Walden, Grimsditch Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's proper Essex - old oak and beech trees, plenty of shade, and the kind of paths that feel like they've been walked for centuries because they probably have.

The wood itself isn't massive, so you're looking at a decent walk rather than an all-day hike. The main appeal is straightforward: ancient trees, good air, and you might actually see a green woodpecker if you're quiet enough. There are a few established paths cutting through, though they can get a bit muddy after rain. It's the sort of place where families with kids aged six upwards will get something out of it - old enough to manage woodland uneven ground, young enough to be excited by spotting wildlife and climbing on fallen logs.

Walkers and local history types will find it worth the trip. The woodland's ancient status matters if you're into that sort of thing - it's been there for centuries. Allow two hours maximum, really. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. It's free to access, though parking might be tight depending on when you visit.

If you're based at Hidden Gem Glamping or Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, this makes a solid morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not a destination in itself, but it breaks up a park holiday nicely and doesn't feel touristy.
