Greystoke Church

The churchyard at Greystoke sits quietly a few miles south of Penrith, the kind of place where you can actually hear the wind move through the yew trees. This is proper Lake District church country - medieval stonework, a graveyard that's been doing its job for centuries, and the sort of peaceful corner you stumble upon by accident when you're meant to be somewhere else.

What you get is a genuinely old place of worship. The church itself dates back centuries, and inside there's the usual Lake District mix of Norman arches, later additions, and memorials to local families who've been buried here since time immemorial. The setting matters more than the interior - it's the kind of spot that makes you understand why people built churches where they did. Good light, tucked into the landscape, quiet as anything.

This works best for walkers breaking a route, or anyone with a real interest in medieval churches rather than tourists ticking boxes. You won't need more than thirty minutes, and admission is free (as most rural churches are, though donations are always appreciated). Go midweek if you can - fewer cars, more thinking space.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Beckses is closest at 2.5 miles - Greystoke makes a straightforward morning detour before heading up to Ullswater proper, or a gentle ramble from Park Foot or Waterfoot. Don't make it your day's centrepiece, but do swing past if you're in the area. Worth the small drive from Penrith, genuinely.
