Brownhow Hill

A steady climb through bracken and heather brings you to this modest fell that punches well above its weight for views. Standing at just 410 metres, Brownhow Hill might not grab headlines like its loftier Lakeland neighbours, but the panorama from the top takes in Ullswater's full length and the eastern fells beyond.

Families with older children will find this a proper introduction to fell walking without the drama of a proper mountain assault. The path from the main road near Penrith is clear enough, though it gets boggy after rain - walking boots essential. Allow two hours for the round trip, including a decent stop at the summit to soak up those views.

What makes this hill special is how it sits apart from the main fell groups, giving you a grandstand view of the action rather than being lost in it. On a clear day you'll spot Helvellyn's bulk to the south and the Pennines rolling away eastward. The descent back toward Ullswater is particularly lovely, with the lake getting larger with each step.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Ullswater Holiday Park or Park Foot makes this an ideal morning expedition before an afternoon by the water. Just don't expect mountain goat bragging rights - this is hill walking for people who prefer their adventures measured in hours rather than epic sagas.
