Greystoke Moor Plantation

Dense coniferous woodland stretches across this working plantation just west of Penrith, creating a proper network of forestry tracks that walkers seem to have largely to themselves. The paths here aren't waymarked tourist trails - they're the real deal, muddy and functional, weaving between rows of spruce and pine that block out most of the sky.

Families with young children might find it a bit monotonous after the first mile or so. The trees all look much the same, and there's precious little wildlife to spot beyond the occasional red squirrel if you're lucky. Serious walkers and trail runners, though, will appreciate the solitude and the chance to cover some proper distance without bumping into crowds.

Expect to get your boots dirty. The tracks can be boggy even in dry weather, and some of the steeper sections get properly slippery when wet. It's free to wander, naturally, and you could easily spend two hours exploring the main routes if you're keen on a decent workout.

For those staying at nearby sites like Ullswater Holiday Park or Park Foot Holiday Park, it makes a decent change from the more popular Lake District walks. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy views - this is proper working countryside rather than scenic splendour.
