Summerground Crags

The walk up Summerground Crags rewards you with proper fell views across the Eden Valley. It's not a massive peak by Lake District standards - more of a bracing afternoon walk from Penrith than an all-day expedition. You're looking at rough moorland terrain, sparse vegetation, and when the weather plays ball, clear sightlines across to the Pennines.

This suits walkers who want actual hills without the crowds that plague Helvellyn or Catbells. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the rocky sections tedious. There's nothing fancy at the top - no cafe, no visitor centre - just space and the sort of views that remind you why the Lake District fringe exists.

Free to access, as with most of the Cumbrian fells. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how often you stop for photos. Conditions can turn quickly on the higher moorland, so check the forecast and bring proper kit.

If you're based at any of the nearby parks - Beckses is closest at under three miles - it slots well into a broader walking holiday. You could pair it with the more established peaks in the central Lakes, or use it as a quiet alternative when the main honeypots are rammed with visitors. The moorland character means it feels genuinely remote, despite being barely twenty minutes from Penrith.
