Greig Park

You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you step into Greig Park, just outside Leven in Fife. It's a genuine nature reserve rather than a manicured park - paths wind through native trees and scrubland where you might spot woodpeckers, squirrels, and if you're lucky, roe deer moving between the bracken. The reserve isn't vast, so most people get round it in under an hour, though there's enough variation in the paths to make it worth lingering if you've got time.

This works best for families wanting a break from the beach at Leven itself, or for anyone with a genuine interest in Scottish woodland ecology. The walking is easy enough for younger kids, though pushchairs would struggle on the narrower sections. It's free to access, which means you can simply turn up and have a wander without any faffing about with entry fees.

The real value here is as a morning or late-afternoon detour if you're staying at one of the caravan parks within a few miles - Leven Beach Holiday Park and Silverburn Park are practically on your doorstep. Combine it with a walk into Leven town centre or down to the beach itself and you've got a decent half-day sorted. Go when it's not raining, mind - the paths get boggy and muddy, which loses some of the appeal. Autumn is genuinely brilliant here, with proper colour in the canopy.
