Colliston Hill

Rising modestly above the Fife countryside near Leven, Colliston Hill offers a proper leg-stretch with rewarding views across the Forth Valley. The climb itself isn't particularly taxing - you're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour from the nearest parking spot, depending on your route and how often you stop to catch your breath.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from this one. The summit gives you a cracking panorama that takes in the Forth bridges on a clear day, plus the rolling farmland that characterises this part of Fife. It's the sort of hill where you'll want to pack a flask and maybe a sandwich.

What makes Colliston Hill work well for a holiday is its proximity to several caravan parks around Leven - Letham Feus Lodge and Wigwam Holidays Montrave Estate are both within easy reach. You could easily combine a morning climb with an afternoon on Leven Beach, or use it as a warm-up walk before tackling something more ambitious in the Lomond Hills.

The beauty of hills like this is their simplicity. No entrance fees, no opening hours to worry about, just you and the Scottish countryside. Pack waterproofs though - Fife weather can turn quickly, and you don't want to be caught out on the exposed summit.
