Green's Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this proper woodland escape just outside Hereford. Green's Wood isn't marked on every tourist map, which keeps the crowds away and maintains that peaceful atmosphere serious walkers appreciate.

Families with younger children might find the terrain a bit challenging in places - the paths can get muddy after rain and some sections are steep enough to make pushchairs impractical. But for anyone who enjoys a decent woodland walk without the fuss of visitor centres and car park fees, it's well worth the detour.

The wood connects to several footpaths that link back towards Hereford, making it easy to extend your walk if the mood takes you. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, though autumn is when the place really shows off with those lovely golden colours filtering through the canopy.

With holiday parks like Poston Mill Touring & Holiday Home Park and The Fold both within a mile, it makes for an easy morning or afternoon expedition. Allow a couple of hours to explore properly, longer if you're planning to follow the connecting paths. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, but that's part of the appeal - just you and the trees.
