Fox Close

Ancient woodland tracks wind through this relatively small forest area just outside Hereford, where the canopy closes overhead and the urban world feels properly distant. Fox Close isn't the sort of place that appears on many tourist maps, which is rather the point - it's a quiet spot for a decent walk without the crowds you'll find at better-known Herefordshire beauty spots.

Families with young children will find the paths manageable, though don't expect waymarked trails or interpretation boards. This is woodland in its natural state, where you might spot deer if you're quiet enough and the light filtering through the leaves creates those moments that make you reach for your camera. Dog walkers seem to know about it, judging by the well-worn paths.

Allow an hour or two depending on how far you want to explore. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, and muddy boots are a given after rain. It's the sort of place that works well as a morning constitutional if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Poston Mill or Preston Campsite - close enough to Hereford for supplies but far enough out to feel like proper countryside. Not spectacular, but honestly peaceful.
