Crickdee Wood

Dense canopy overhead blocks out most of the sky, creating that cathedral-like feeling you get in proper old woodland. Crickdee Wood sits just outside Hereford and feels properly wild despite being reasonably accessible. The paths wind through what looks like ancient mixed woodland - oak, beech, and ash creating a lovely dappled light on sunny days.

Dog walkers will have a field day here. The terrain is varied enough to keep things interesting without being too challenging for families with younger children. I'd allow at least an hour to do it justice, though you could easily spend a morning if you're in no hurry.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - the mix of mature trees and undergrowth attracts a decent variety of species. Spring is probably the best time to visit when everything's coming into leaf and the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic.

For those staying at nearby parks like Byecross Farm or Poston Mill, it makes a cracking morning excursion. The wood provides a nice contrast to the more manicured countryside around Hereford. Kids might find it a bit samey after an hour unless they're properly into nature, but for adults seeking a bit of peace and proper woodland atmosphere, it delivers.
