Green Knoll

Green Knoll rises abruptly from the moorland between Carnforth and the Lake District, offering one of those views that justifies the trek up. It's a proper fell walk rather than a casual stroll - steep in places, boggy underfoot after rain, but nothing that demands mountaineering skills.

The summit itself is modest, bare moorland rather than a dramatic peak, but the payoff is the 360-degree perspective across Lancashire and into Cumbria. On clear days you're looking towards the Pennines. The walk takes most people around 90 minutes there and back, depending on fitness and how long you loiter at the top photographing the view.

This is squarely a walkers' terrain. Families with young kids might find the ascent tedious without proper motivation - there's no cafe at the summit, no facilities whatsoever. History enthusiasts won't find much except the fell itself. But if you're after genuine moorland walking without the tourist infrastructure of somewhere like Malham, Green Knoll delivers.

The nearest base worth considering is Primrose Glamping Pods, just 1.7 miles away - handy if you want upmarket accommodation without the 'let's rough it' aspect. Free to access, and you can walk it year-round, though winter fog can rob you of those views entirely. Best visited when the weather's settled and the ground's relatively dry. Trainers won't cut it; proper boots essential.
