Green Castle

The remains of Green Castle sit on a low hill just outside Wooler, commanding views across the Cheviot foothills. What you're looking at is a motte-and-bailey fortification from the Norman period - earthworks really, rather than the stonework you might expect. The mound itself is substantial enough, and if you're into medieval military architecture, you'll spot the defensive ditch that once ringed it. The site itself is modest and takes perhaps twenty minutes to explore properly, though the surrounding countryside rewards a longer ramble. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting - this is genuine 12th-century stuff, untouched and unglamorous. Families with younger children might find it underwhelming unless you can spin a good tale about Norman knights. It's free to visit and open at all hours since there's nothing to lock up. Winter and early spring are best - the grass is short enough to see the earthworks clearly, and you won't be battling with overgrown nettles. If you're staying at Highburn House Caravan Park, just down the road, this works well as a morning detour before heading out to explore the Cheviots or the Northumberland coast. Don't expect interpretation boards or facilities. Bring proper shoes because it can be boggy. The views alone make the walk worthwhile, even if the archaeology feels a bit sparse.
