Great Harlow

The walk up Great Harlow isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the top. This North Yorkshire peak sits just inland from Carnforth, and on a clear day the views west towards the Lake District are genuinely worth the effort - you can see right across to the higher fells if you time it properly.

It's the sort of walk that appeals to reasonably fit walkers rather than casual strollers. An hour and a half there and back, give or take, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit. The terrain is manageable but unforgiving if the weather turns, so check conditions before heading out. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the climb a slog.

There's nothing complicated about visiting - it's free to access, no booking needed, no facilities at the top. Just turn up, get your boots on, and go. The best time is late afternoon in summer, when the light's soft and the crowds are minimal. Winter visits are possible but the path can get sketchy underfoot.

If you're based at Orcaber Farm or The Dalesbridge nearby, Great Harlow makes a solid morning or afternoon outing without eating into a full day. It pairs well with exploring the broader Carnforth area rather than being a destination in itself. Don't expect isolation - it's popular enough - but the views justify the walk.
