God’s Pocket

The coastal path drops you at God's Pocket and you understand the name immediately - it's a tight, dramatic ravine where the Jurassic cliffs squeeze down to a sliver of shingle beach. Water runs through here year-round, and the whole thing feels properly remote despite being within walking distance of Dorchester.

It's not a destination that demands hours of your time. Twenty minutes wandering the beach and clambering over rocks will do most people. The real appeal is the geological layering - you can see the different stone bands if you know what you're looking at, and even if you don't, the landscape just feels ancient. Photographers and geology enthusiasts will get the most from it. Kids enjoy the scrambling element, though it gets slippery when wet and there's no safety railings, so supervise them properly.

Access is free, as with most of the coast around here. Time it for low tide if you want to explore properly - the rocks are less treacherous and you get more beach. The walk down takes fifteen minutes from the car park; bring decent footwear.

If you're based at Purbeck Glamping just down the road, this is an easy add-on to a morning walk. Durdle Door Holiday Park and Crossways are also close enough for a half-day excursion. The surrounding Dorset coast has enough to keep you occupied for a week, but God's Pocket itself is more of a pit stop than a centerpiece.
