Winfrith Nature Reserve

The heath here rolls on for miles - open, windswept, properly wild in a way that surprises visitors who expect tamed Dorset countryside. Winfrith Nature Reserve is the real deal: a working landscape where conservation happens on the ground, not just in theory. You'll find lowland heathland dominated by heather and gorse, threading between scattered Scots pine and birch. It's good walking territory, with unmarked paths crisscrossing the reserve and views stretching toward the Purbeck Hills.

Birdwatchers should come with binoculars. Nightjars are here in summer - you might hear their churring call at dusk. Adders, slow worms and all three native British lizard species use the heath. It's not a manicured nature trail with interpretation boards; it feels more like stepping into a landscape that belongs to the wildlife, not the visitors. That's rather the point.

Walkers get the most from Winfrith. You need decent legs and a decent map - bring OS Explorer 117 or load the route beforehand. Allow two to three hours for a proper circuit. Spring and early summer are best: heather flowers in August and September, but late summer can be overgrown. The reserve is free and open year-round, though it's essentially always open access - no gates, no visitor centre.

From Dorchester, it's a short drive east. Base yourself at Durdle Door Holiday Park - brilliant spot with genuine five-star reviews - or Warmwell if you want something closer. The reserve pairs well with nearby Browndown Common or a day exploring the Jurassic Coast just south.
