Winfrith & Tadnoll Nature Reserve

Sprawling across former Ministry of Defence land between Wool and Winfrith Newburgh, this nature reserve feels properly wild despite being just off the A352. The site's military past - it was once the Atomic Energy Authority's research establishment - has left it wonderfully undeveloped, creating an unusual landscape of heathland, grassland and scrubland that's brilliant for wildlife spotting.

Birdwatchers will have a field day here. Yellowhammers, linnets and stonechats are regular sights, while the varied habitats attract everything from skylarks to kestrels. The reserve's mix of dry heath and marshy areas means there's always something different to see as you wander the network of informal paths.

Families with older children who enjoy proper countryside walks will get the most from a visit - though it's not pushchair-friendly terrain. The paths can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Allow at least two hours to explore properly, longer if you're keen on photography or birdwatching.

From Parkdean Resorts Warmwell Holiday Park, it's a quick drive north, making it an excellent alternative to busier Dorset attractions. The reserve connects well with walks around nearby Bovington, and you could easily combine it with a visit to the Tank Museum for a full day out. It's the sort of place that reminds you why Dorset's countryside is so special - no crowds, just proper English heathland at its finest.
