Gleann Loch

The water at Gleann Loch sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the hills above so clearly you'd swear you were looking at a photograph. It's a proper freshwater loch tucked into Argyll countryside, about three miles from Lochgilphead, and absolutely the sort of place you stumble upon when you're staying at one of the local parks rather than somewhere you'd drive miles out of your way to visit.

There's not much infrastructure here - no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of - which is exactly what makes it work. You get the lake, the hills, the quiet. Walkers will find the shoreline decent enough for a gentle circuit, though it's not a spectacular loop. The real draw is the light in late afternoon when the water turns golden and the shadows lengthen across the glens. Photographers who know what they're doing will appreciate it; families with young kids after a proper day out might find an hour here a bit thin.

If you're based at Lochgilphead Caravan Park or The Pod Over By, Gleann Loch works as a pocket-sized detour rather than a destination. Pop over in the late morning before lunch, bring a thermos, spend an hour walking the shore. Don't expect crowds or signposting. The admission is free - there's nothing to pay - and you can spend as long as you like just sitting by the water. On a clear day, with the right light, it's rather lovely. On a grey one, it's moody. Both have their charm.
