About Gill Rigg
You get limestone moorland underfoot and sweeping vistas across Ribblesdale when the weather plays ball. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the slog. The paths are well-trodden and there's no scrambling involved, which means families with older kids manage it fine. Younger ones might find the climb tedious unless they're already keen walkers.
This is a walker's peak rather than a sightseeer's spectacle. There's no café at the top, no facilities - just quiet and space and the satisfaction of being on higher ground. Allow two to three hours depending on pace and whether you linger at the summit. Spring and early autumn are best; winter can be boggy and exposed.
If you're based at Philpin Farm Campsite or Ribblesdale Pods, both just a few miles down the valley, Gill Rigg makes a cracking half-day addition to exploring the Settle area. It's the sort of walk that justifies a night in the hills without demanding a full expedition. Worth doing once, especially if you're combining it with the Ribblehead Viaduct or other walks in the valley.
