Gilbert's Hill Wood

Ancient oak and ash trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this proper slice of Herefordshire countryside. Gilbert's Hill Wood feels wonderfully untouched - no manicured trails or visitor centres here, just raw woodland where bluebells carpet the floor in spring and autumn leaves crunch satisfyingly underfoot.

Walkers will find this a lovely spot for a proper ramble, though don't expect waymarked routes or detailed maps. The paths can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of adventure will enjoy the exploratory nature of it all, but pushchair users should probably give it a miss.

Birdwatchers come here for the woodland species - nuthatches, treecreepers, and if you're lucky, the occasional woodpecker. The varied terrain means plenty of hiding spots for wildlife, making each visit feel different depending on the season.

Location-wise, it's well placed for a countryside break. Several holiday options sit within easy reach, including Burhope Farm Campsite and Goytree Glamping & Treehouses, both under five miles away. Long Coppice Campsite offers another base for exploring this corner of Herefordshire. Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's fine and you've brought a picnic.
