Kilpeck Castle

A Norman motte-and-bailey castle reduced to its earthworks, Kilpeck sits quietly in the Herefordshire countryside near the village of the same name. There's not much standing stonework here - what you get is the dramatic raised mound itself, surrounded by defensive ditches, which tells the story of 11th-century military engineering more clearly than many a reconstructed fortress. It's the kind of place where you can actually read the landscape, trace the original layout, and understand why someone chose this spot to build.

History buffs will find it genuinely interesting, especially if they're keen on how Normans controlled conquered territory. Walkers get a decent short ramble with proper views across the border country towards Wales. Kids under ten might exhaust their patience in fifteen minutes, but older ones who've learned about medieval castles at school tend to click with it - there's something tangible about standing on the mound itself.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Burhope Farm is closest at just over two miles, or Broadmeadow Glamping if you fancy something plusher - it makes a perfectly good afternoon slot between other activities. Free to visit, no gates, no facilities. Allow an hour if you're taking photos and thinking properly about what you're looking at; twenty minutes if you're just stopping by.

Go when it's not waterlogged. Winter rain leaves the ditches boggy and the mound slippery. Spring or early autumn work best.
