Giant's Park

There's a sprawling green space just outside Belfast that doesn't get nearly enough attention from visiting families. Giant's Park in Lisburn and Castlereagh is the sort of place where kids burn off proper amounts of energy without you feeling like you're paying through the nose for the privilege.

The park itself centres around open grassland, play areas, and enough walking routes to keep you occupied for a good two to three hours if you're not rushed. There's a decent play zone for younger children - climbing frames, swings, the usual suspects - but the real draw is the space itself. On a clear day you get proper views across the landscape, and it's flat enough that even reluctant walkers don't spend the entire time complaining.

Who gets the most out of it? Families with kids under twelve, definitely. Walkers will find it pleasant rather than thrilling - there's nothing dramatic about the terrain. History types won't find much to chew on. But if you're after a morning or afternoon to let the children loose without fighting crowds, it delivers.

Admission appears to be free, which is always welcome. Allow a couple of hours if you've got young ones who want to explore properly. If you're staying at Dundonald Touring Caravan Park or The Pods at Streamvale - both just a few miles away - this slots in nicely as a convenient half-day outing. It's the sort of local spot that works brilliantly for breaking up a week without the tourism overhead.
