The textile collection at Gawthorpe Hall, just outside Nelson, is housed in a proper Lancashire gem that doesn't get nearly enough visitors. You're walking through rooms crammed with looms, spinning wheels, and centuries worth of fabric samples - everything from medieval tapestries to Victorian lace that'll make your jaw drop. The collection tells the story of what made this region tick: the mills, the skill, the obsession with cloth.

It's brilliant for anyone who cares about how things actually get made. Kids under ten might fidget a bit unless they're craft-minded, but teenagers with any interest in design or manufacturing will spend a solid two hours here without complaint. The real strength is how it connects the objects to the people - you're not just looking at pretty fabrics, you're understanding why Lancashire mattered.

Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to properly absorb it. The hall itself is worth a wander round too. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Higher Grange or Trawden Forest are both within spitting distance - this makes an excellent rainy-day plan that doesn't feel like a compromise. Shay Gate Farm is a touch further but still reasonable.

Check ahead for opening times and admission charges before you go. It's not one of those attractions that's open seven days a week, so missing the window would be annoying.
