Gat Cliff

Standing at 142 metres above the Undercliff, Gat Cliff offers one of the Isle of Wight's most dramatic coastal viewpoints. The climb up from Ventnor is proper steep but well worth the effort - you'll be rewarded with sweeping views across the English Channel and along the island's southern coastline.

Walkers and outdoor types will get the most from this spot. It's part of the coastal path network, so you can easily combine it with longer hikes along the Undercliff or towards St Catherine's Point. The cliff-top position means it's exposed to the elements, so pack layers and check the weather before heading up.

Families with younger children might find the ascent challenging, though older kids who enjoy a bit of adventure will love scrambling about the clifftop paths. There's no admission fee - it's simply part of the island's natural landscape.

From nearby holiday parks like Appuldurcombe Gardens or Parkdean's Lower Hyde, Gat Cliff makes for a cracking half-day excursion. Allow a couple of hours for the walk up and time to properly take in the views. Best visited on clear days when you can see right across to the mainland - on misty mornings you might as well save your energy for the beach.
