Ganavan Sands

The walk down to Ganavan Sands from Oban takes about twenty minutes, and it's worth every step. You emerge onto a proper crescent of golden sand backed by low dunes and grass, with the kind of view across the Firth of Lorn that makes you understand why people move to Argyll. The beach itself is clean, relatively quiet even in summer, and has that Scottish west coast feel - dramatic sky, the chance of a sudden shower, then sunshine again.

It's a straightforward family beach. Rock pools at low tide keep kids occupied for ages, the sand is firm enough for building, and there's enough space that you won't feel hemmed in. Swimmers will find the water cold but manageable in summer months. The grassy area above the beach works well for a picnic if the wind isn't doing its usual thing.

If you're staying at Oban Holiday Park or one of the other caravan spots within four miles, this is an obvious afternoon outing. Combine it with a walk around Oban itself, or head out on the water if you fancy a boat trip to Mull or Iona. The beach doesn't demand hours - an afternoon covers it comfortably - but it's the kind of place you'll return to if the weather's kind.

Get there early in peak season. The car park fills up, and the walk back uphill in August heat with tired kids tests the patience.
