Gallt y Goedhwch

The walk up Gallt y Goedhwch is properly rewarding - it's not a massive peak, but the views across Powys from the top make the effort worthwhile. You're looking out over rolling farmland and distant ridges, the kind of landscape that feels properly wild even though Welshpool is just a few miles away.

It's a decent hike rather than a casual stroll. The path climbs steadily through moorland, and you'll want proper boots - it can be boggy in places, especially after rain. Allow a couple of hours up and down if you're moving at a reasonable pace. The summit itself isn't dramatic, no trig point or shelter, just open moorland with that view.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a family picnic destination - kids might struggle with the boggy bits and the lack of facilities - but for anyone who likes honest Welsh hillwalking without the crowds of Snowdonia, it's excellent. The access is straightforward from near Welshpool, so it fits perfectly into a long weekend based at one of the nearby holiday parks.

Valley View or Cae Nant Glamping would both give you a comfortable base for tackling this alongside other local walks. Go on a clear day if you can - the views are genuinely worth timing right. It's free to walk, naturally, and there's nowhere to buy refreshments up there, so bring a flask.
