Gabhalach

Gabhalach is a proper little hill that rises above the landscape near Lochgilphead, and it's the sort of peak that rewards you without demanding a full day's commitment. The walk up takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath - it's steep in places, that's honest, but nothing that would trouble anyone with reasonable legs.

From the summit you get views across Argyll that justify the effort: on a clear day the Cowal Peninsula spreads out to the south, and you can see why folk have been drawn to this corner of Scotland for centuries. The hill itself is moorland and rock, so there's genuine Scottish hill-walking about it, none of that manicured path nonsense. Bring proper boots rather than trainers and you'll be fine.

It works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at Lochgilphead Caravan Park or The Pod Over By - both within striking distance - leaving the afternoon free for exploring the town itself or heading down to the coast. History types will appreciate knowing this is Argyll proper, ancient heartland of Scottish kingdoms, though there's nothing obvious on the ground to tell you that.

The walk suits walkers of intermediate ability and anyone after a bit of a leg-stretch without the full Munro commitment. Kids will manage it but might grumble on the way up. Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewest midges. Free to access, naturally.
