Furze Tor

Furze Tor is a straightforward moorland summit on Dartmoor, sitting about 1,400 feet above sea level with views across the high moor toward Tavistock and beyond. There's not much infrastructure here - no visitor centre, no facilities, just granite tors and heather. The walk up from the surrounding tracks is gentle enough, though the ground underfoot can be boggy depending on when you visit.

This appeals mostly to walkers and those chasing Dartmoor's distinctive rocky outcrops. The views are decent on a clear day, but they're not dramatically different from what you'd see from several other tors nearby. If you're already walking the moor, it's absolutely worth the small detour. If you're driving from Tavistock specifically to bag just this one peak, you're probably adding unnecessary mileage to your route.

The real value comes when you're combining it with other Dartmoor walks - perhaps looping toward Higher White Tor or dropping down toward the valleys. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a steady climb and views, longer if you're exploring the wider moorland. There's no entrance fee, obviously. Autumn and late spring tend to be best - summer can mean crowds on the popular routes, and winter brings weather that can close in fast.

Lydford Caravan & Camping Park sits just a few miles away toward Lydford, making it a solid base if you're planning multiple days on the moor. The tor itself is free, accessible year-round, and demands only decent walking boots and decent weather sense.
