About Friar's Crag

The walk up to Friar's Crag takes about twenty minutes from the lake shore near Keswick, and it's one of those viewpoints that actually lives up to the fuss. You're standing on a rocky promontory looking straight down the length of Derwent Water, with the fells rising up either side - it's the view that got nineteenth-century artists scrambling for their sketchbooks, and frankly it still stops you in your tracks.

It's a proper fell walk rather than a gentle stroll. The path climbs steeply through woodland before opening out onto the crag itself, where a stone beacon marks the spot. On a clear day you can see right down to the southern end of the lake, with Catbells rising sharp on the left. Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here - it's not taxingly long, but you earn the view. Families with younger kids might find the climb a bit much, though children who enjoy scrambling over rocks will love the actual crag itself.

Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's low and the crowds thinner. Midday in summer you'll be wedged between dozens of other people, which rather spoils the romance. The National Trust manages access here, and it's free to visit.

Staying at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or Castlerigg Hall puts you well positioned for this walk - both are within striking distance of the lake shore access point. Combine it with a paddle on the water or a wander around Keswick itself and you've got a proper morning sorted.
