Freeholds Top

The walk up Freeholds Top rewards you with views that stretch across the Rossendale Valley and beyond - proper expansive moorland stuff. It's not a massive peak by any means, but the route from Rossendale itself is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the climb a bit of a slog.

Once you're up there, you get those classic Pennine vistas: rolling hills, reservoir glints catching the sun, and on a clear day you can pick out the surrounding fells without squinting too hard. The moorland itself is open and windswept, which means the weather can turn quickly, so don't underestimate what looks like a gentle trot on the map.

Allow yourself a good couple of hours there and back depending on fitness levels. It's free, naturally - just park up near Rossendale and head out. The best time is spring through to autumn when the paths aren't sodden and visibility is decent. Winter is doable but the wind can be fierce.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Rossendale Holiday Cottages & Glamping is close by at 4.5 miles - this makes for an easy morning or afternoon out without needing a long drive. Old Chamber Camping at 6 miles would also work well as a base. The walk itself doesn't take all day, so you could easily combine it with exploring Rossendale town or hitting another local spot for lunch.
