Fredden Hill

The walk up Fredden Hill takes you above Wooler on a straightforward route that rewards effort with proper views across the Cheviot foothills. It's not a massive undertaking - most people allow 90 minutes there and back - but the climb is steady enough that you'll know you've done something by the top.

What you get is a viewpoint that works. On clear days the Cheviot ridge dominates the southern horizon, and you can pick out distant landmarks towards the Pennines. The surrounding moorland doesn't pretend to be dramatic, but there's something satisfying about standing on a height and actually being able to see where you've come from.

This is walkers' terrain, really. Families with younger kids might find the ascent a bit much for what amounts to a moorland summit, though teenagers keen on getting outside will take it in their stride. History buffs won't find much up there except the land itself, but that's often reward enough.

Highburn House Caravan Park sits just 2 miles south, making Fredden Hill an obvious morning outing before breakfast or a late afternoon walk when you want something straightforward without serious commitment. Riverside Wooler is nearby too if you're based there. The moorland can be boggy after rain - go with proper boots and expect muddy patches rather than a manicured path. Early mornings or late afternoons catch the light best. Free to walk, naturally.
