Framlingham Mere

The water at Framlingham Mere sits deceptively still, ringed by woodland that feels properly remote despite being barely three miles from Woodbridge. It's a shallow glacial lake - the kind of place where you understand why East Anglia's so flat when you see how the land simply dropped away here thousands of years ago.

There's not much to do in the conventional sense. You walk round it, or you don't. Birdwatchers absolutely love it - the reed beds attract everything from bitterns to marsh harriers depending on the season. If you're the type who finds contentment in staying still and watching water, this delivers. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking if there's anything else.

Access is free and straightforward from the Woodbridge side. The walk round takes a couple of hours depending on how often you stop. Winter's actually the best time - fewer midges, clearer sightlines, that particular quality of light you only get in East England when it's cold.
