Framlingham Castle

Those distinctive red-brick walls you spot from the A1120 near Woodbridge aren't quite what they seem - Framlingham Castle is all theatre and very little substance, which sounds like a complaint but absolutely isn't. Walk the entire circuit of the curtain wall - properly walk it, up onto the ramparts - and you'll understand why medieval lords chose this spot. The view across the Mere to open countryside is genuinely arresting, and from up there you realise the castle's real trick: those towering walls with their dramatic chimneys were never meant to withstand a serious siege. This was about looking powerful, about making a statement.

Inside the walls? Mostly air and grass. There's a Tudor poorhouse standing incongruously near the entrance - a reminder that the castle spent centuries doing far less glamorous work than defending the realm. History enthusiasts will appreciate that, even if kids expecting dungeons and secret passages will find it a bit thin. Allow two hours maximum to walk the walls properly and poke about, longer if you're the type to sit on the grass and sketch.

English Heritage manages it, so expect the usual: admission charge, decent signage, a small visitor centre. The surrounding country is proper rolling Suffolk - Carlton Meres and Brick Kiln Farm are both within five miles if you're basing yourself in the area. Worth combining with a walk along the Mere itself. The castle alone won't fill a day, but it's a solid anchor point for exploring Woodbridge and the quieter corners of East Suffolk.
