Fountains Fell South Top

The walk up Fountains Fell South Top rewards you with one of the finest views across the Yorkshire Dales - and it's considerably less crowded than Pen-y-ghent, which looms nearby. You're looking at a straightforward moorland climb from Settle, gaining height steadily through rough grassland and limestone terrain until you break onto the open fell itself. On a clear day, the vista stretches across Ribblesdale and down towards Malham - proper dramatic stuff.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. It's not technically difficult, but the ground can be boggy and the wind has teeth up there, so come prepared. The fell itself is free to roam - this is proper walking country, not a manicured attraction.

Walkers will absolutely have the time of their lives here. The route suits anyone with reasonable fitness; families with older kids can manage it without fuss, though you'll want proper boots and weather-appropriate kit. History types might appreciate the old quarrying evidence scattered about. Summer is obviously nicer, though September often delivers clearer skies with fewer midges.

It fits perfectly into a Dales break based at one of the glamping spots - Ribblesdale Pods or Malham Glamping Pods are both close enough for easy access. Combine it with a wander around Settle's market square or a visit to Malham Cove, and you've got a solid day sorted. Honestly, if you're hiking in the area, this one shouldn't get missed.
