Football Ground

Just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed, Football Ground isn't a stadium at all - it's a proper nature reserve that catches most visitors off guard. The name comes from its flat, open grassland that locals once used for exactly what you'd think, but these days it's all about the birds and riverside walking.

The reserve sits along the Tweed with views across towards Scotland, and you'll find yourself watching waders and wildfowl year-round. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, no gift shop faffing about. Spring brings migrating birds through in serious numbers, which gets the binoculars crowd proper excited. Summer's fine too if you just want a walk without the mud from October onwards.

Really, this works best for serious birdwatchers or anyone who wants a low-key riverside stroll away from the tourist trail. Kids won't be thrilled unless they're genuinely into spotting things, to be honest. The walk takes as long as you fancy - could be twenty minutes, could be two hours depending on how many birds you want to track down.
