Fonllech Menhir 3

This standing stone sits alone in the Gwynedd landscape near Harlech, a proper Bronze Age monument that's been marking this hillside for thousands of years. It's a simple thing really - just a tall slab of rock pointing skyward - but that's rather the point. No visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards. You either find it or you don't.

The walk to reach it is straightforward enough, though you'll need decent map work or GPS because signage is minimal. Once you're there, the stone commands the space around it in that quiet way ancient monuments do. It's the sort of place that makes you think about who put it here and why, stood where they stood, looked at the same view of Snowdonia in the distance.

History enthusiasts and walkers will get more from this than casual visitors. Kids might find the trek underwhelming unless they're already keen on Bronze Age archaeology. Allow an hour return if you're hiking from Harlech, less if you've got a vehicle nearby.

It's free, obviously - there's nothing to charge admission for. Best visited on a clear day when the mountains are visible; on a grey afternoon it's a bit moody and atmospheric but less rewarding photographically.
