Fonllech Menhir 1

A single standing stone rising from the Welsh hillside near Harlech - that's Fonllech Menhir. It's not dramatic or towering, but there's something properly compelling about walking out to find it. Bronze Age folk hauled this thing upright thousands of years ago, and it's still here, weather-beaten and moss-covered, doing exactly what it did five millennia back.

You won't spend hours here. It's the sort of stop that works brilliantly if you're already walking in the area - a quick detour, maybe twenty minutes round trip depending on where you park. The real appeal is in the walk itself and that moment when you spot it, half-hidden by the landscape. History types and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from it; families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're keen on the outdoors anyway.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no entry fee to worry about. It's just you and the stone. Early morning or late afternoon light catches it nicely if you've got a camera.

It slots well into a caravan park stay around Harlech. Castle View sits barely two miles away, and Shell Island and the other parks cluster within five miles. The walk to Fonllech works as a half-morning outing before heading down to the beach at Black Rock Sands or exploring Harlech Castle itself. If you're into standing stones and Iron Age monuments, this is worth the detour. If you're after dramatic views and big experiences, give it a miss.
