Fonaby Top

The walk up Fonaby Top rewards you with proper countryside views across the Lincolnshire Wolds - a landscape that rolls much more dramatically than outsiders expect. You're standing on one of the region's high points, and on a clear day you can see across farmland that seems to stretch for ever. It's genuinely worth the effort from Market Rasen, about eight miles away.

This isn't a dramatic peak or a hard slog. The ascent is manageable for families with older kids and anyone used to walking the English countryside. Most people spend between thirty minutes and an hour at the top, depending on how much time you want to spend lingering over the views. The ground can be boggy in wet weather, so decent boots matter.

Walkers and those chasing panoramic views will get the most from it. History enthusiasts less so - there's no major heritage site up here, just the landscape itself. Bring a packed lunch if you fancy it; there's nothing at the summit. It's a free walk, no facilities, so go prepared.

If you're basing yourself at Wolds View Country Park or Station Farm Caravan and Camping Site - both excellent spots nearby - Fonaby Top makes a solid morning excursion. Neither park is more than a few miles away, which makes it a natural add-on to a Wolds holiday rather than a destination in itself. Best visited from late spring through early autumn when the ground's drier and the light cleaner.
