Wold Top

The highest point in Lincolnshire might not set your heart racing - at 423 metres, Wold Top is hardly Alpine - but that's rather the point. This is proper gentle walking country, the sort of landscape that rewards a slow pace and a decent pair of boots.

You'll find it on the Lincolnshire Wolds, rolling chalk hills that rise unexpectedly from the Midlands flatlands. The summit itself is farmland, not dramatic or bare, but the views across the county are genuinely impressive once you're up there. On a clear day you can see across the Wolds and beyond - a real sense of space in a region that doesn't get much high ground.

It's a walker's destination above all else. Families with young children might find the approach a bit steep for what you get at the top, but serious hikers and anyone after a proper countryside ramble will appreciate the challenge. Market Rasen sits just a few miles south, which makes it a logical stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Station Farm or Wolds View Country Park.

There's no visitor infrastructure here - it's not that sort of place - so come equipped. The walk itself takes a couple of hours depending on your route and fitness. Spring and early autumn are best, when the Wolds don't feel quite so exposed. If you're staying locally for a proper walking holiday, this needs to be on your list. It's accessible without being trivial, and it gives you a proper feel for this underrated corner of England.
