Foel Fach

A modest 611-metre hill that doesn't announce itself loudly - which is precisely why it's worth the bother. Foel Fach sits in that sweet spot between proper Welsh mountain terrain and a walk that won't absolutely knacker you, especially if you're basing yourself near Dolgellau.

The ascent is straightforward rather than technical, though the paths can be boggy and loose in places. You get reasonable views across Snowdonia from the top, and on a clear day it's the kind of spot where you actually feel like you've earned a thermos flask moment. The real appeal lies in its quietness - you won't be jostling with crowds like you would on Cader Idris or Pen-y-ghent.

This is a walkers' hill, pure and simple. Families with older kids who don't mind a muddy scramble will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without much payoff. Budget two to three hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit.

If you're camped at Tyn Cornel or Llwyn yr Helm, Foel Fach makes for a proper day out without requiring a dawn start. It's the kind of walk you do when the weather's decent and you want to move your legs without committing to an all-day expedition. Free to attempt, of course - it's Welsh moorland.
