Foel Caledeiriau

The walk up Foel Caledeiriau isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the top. Starting from near Colwyn Bay, this modest peak rewards you with proper views across the Conwy Valley and out towards the coast - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people bothered climbing it in the first place.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble. The path is well-trodden and you can do the whole thing in under two hours including a sit-down at the summit, which means it works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Maenan Abbey or Waenfechan and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full day out. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine; younger children might find the steepness a bit much.

There's nothing to pay and no formal opening hours - you just turn up and go. Early morning is your best bet if you want to avoid the weekend crowds, and the light is usually better for photography anyway. On a clear day the views justify the effort. On a murky day you're climbing through cloud, which is less thrilling but still atmospheric if you're into that sort of thing.

If you're staying in the area for a week, it's a useful addition to your walking list rather than a destination on its own. Pair it with Conwy itself or the castles nearby for a proper day out.
