Flock Sphere

You'll find yourself in front of a massive wooden sphere in the Northumberland countryside - and yes, it's exactly as odd as it sounds. Flock Sphere is an art installation that looks like something between a giant bird's nest and a modernist sculpture, depending on your mood. The whole thing is made of layered wood and sits there commanding your attention, the kind of thing that stops you mid-walk and makes you squint a bit.

It's a gallery space inside, which surprised me. The interior is surprisingly thoughtful - the curved wooden surfaces create this almost womb-like acoustic effect, and there's usually contemporary art installed within. If you're staying at Woodland Chase Glamping or Coast and Castles Camping, it's a short drive to something genuinely unusual - which beats another castle visit, if I'm honest.
