The tower itself is a substantial stone structure that's managed to weather the ages remarkably well, with thick walls and narrow windows that speak of its defensive purpose. You can still make out the battlements where archers would have kept watch.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to pore over here - the stonework alone tells stories of different building phases and repairs over the centuries. Families with older children might enjoy exploring the structure, though younger ones could get restless after half an hour or so. The views from the top are decent enough, taking in the rolling fields towards Stoke-on-Trent.

Getting there involves a fair bit of walking across farmland, so proper boots are essential. The approach can be muddy after rain, which seems to be most of the time in this part of Staffordshire.
