Fishwife

Fishwife is a working gallery tucked into Whitby's cobbled streets, and it's the kind of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick pop-in. The space showcases contemporary art and craft - mostly pieces by Yorkshire makers - displayed among exposed brick and salvaged timber. It's genuinely intimate, the sort of gallery where you might actually chat to the artist or someone who knows their work properly.

The appeal here is straightforward: if you like looking at things made by real people rather than mass-produced gallery prints, you'll find something worth your time. Don't expect polished commercial slickness; this is grassroots stuff, and that's rather the point. An hour is usually enough unless you're keen on artists' talk or want to browse the small collection of jewellery and prints they stock. It works best for adults and older teenagers with genuine interest in contemporary practice - younger kids might get restless, frankly.

Whitby itself is reason enough to stay in the area, and several parks sit within easy reach: Whitby Holiday Park is barely a mile away, while Broadings Farm offers more character just 1.2 miles out. Both put you close enough to explore the town's galleries, fish and chip shops, and the clifftop ruins without needing to drive daily. Fishwife isn't a standalone draw - but paired with Whitby's charm, it adds depth to a proper coastal break. Free admission, no admission charge that I'm aware of, though supporting the artists with a purchase wouldn't go amiss.
