Fiadhach Barr

Fiadhach Barr isn't one of those peaks that'll stop you dead in your tracks, but if you're staying at The Pod Over By or kicking about Lochgilphead, it's a decent bit of hillwalking without the full commitment of a bigger mountain. You're looking at decent views across Argyll once you're up there, and the walk itself is proper straightforward - nothing technical, just good leg work.

The path takes you through moorland with decent panoramas, especially on a clear day when you can see across to the sea. On a grey afternoon it's less inspiring, mind you. Most people will manage this in a couple of hours round trip if they're reasonably fit, though you want to leave yourself time to actually sit about at the top rather than just tick it off.

Walkers in the area tend to do this as a half-day sortie rather than the main event of their holiday. If you're based at Lochgilphead Caravan Park and the weather's cooperating, it beats sitting in a touring caravan waiting for something to happen. Families with older kids will be fine here, though younger legs might struggle with the moorland sections.

Best approached in spring or early summer when the ground's not waterlogged. Autumn's decent too if the weather holds. Winter can be boggy and dull. There's a car park area near Lochgilphead that gets you to the trailhead without a massive hike-in, which is half the battle with Scottish hills.
