Ffynnonau Park

The walk into Ffynnonau Park from Crickhowell takes you through proper countryside - rolling fields, then suddenly you're surrounded by woodland and a series of natural springs that feed into clear pools below. It's genuinely worth the trek, though fair warning: the paths can be muddy and a bit steep in places, so proper boots are essential.

What you're looking at is a small nature reserve centred around these water sources. The main draw is the landscape itself - it's the kind of place where you can actually hear birdsong without traffic in the background. Walkers absolutely get the most out of it, particularly those who don't mind a moderate hike through wooded terrain. The pools attract dragonflies in summer, and if you're quiet you might spot water birds. Kids can manage it if they're used to countryside walks, though there's not much in the way of interpretation boards or attractions to hold their attention beyond the water itself.

Allow a couple of hours for the full circuit, depending on your pace. Spring through early autumn is best - winter can leave the paths treacherous. The reserve is free to access, which is always a plus. Staying at Cwmdu Campsite just down the road gives you a solid base for exploring this part of the Brecon Beacons. It's not a day-long destination on its own, but as part of a walking holiday in Mid Wales it's absolutely worth adding to your route. The peace alone makes it worthwhile.
