Ffridd Maes-Y-Tail

The walk up Ffridd Maes-y-tail from Bala is properly rewarding - nothing dramatic in height, but the views across the Aran range more than make up for it. You're looking at a decent hill walk rather than a scramble, the kind of thing that takes two to three hours if you're not dawdling, though you can stretch it out longer if you're exploring the plateau at the top.

What strikes you first is how much quieter it is than the bigger peaks nearby. Families with older kids do well here - there's a genuine sense of achievement without the exposed ridges that put off nervous walkers. The paths are clear enough, though it gets boggy in the upper reaches, especially after rain, so proper boots matter more than fancy kit.

From the summit you get proper vistas. Snowdon's visible on a clear day, and you can trace the Aran range south towards Cader Idris. It's the kind of view that makes the muddy scramble entirely worth it. There's nothing up there - no café, no ruins - just moorland and sky, which some people find brilliant and others find a bit bleak.

If you're staying at Tyn Cornel, it's basically on your doorstep - the camping ground sits less than four miles away, making it an ideal afternoon outing if the weather's decent. Go early though. By lunchtime the paths get busy with day-trippers from Bala. Afternoon light's better anyway, and you'll have more chance of clear views.
