Ffridd Llwydiarth

The climb up Ffridd Llwydiarth is proper steep but mercifully short, and if you're based around Dolgellau, it's the sort of walk that rewards you without eating up your whole afternoon. The peak sits at 689 metres, which doesn't sound like much until you're halfway up and your legs are telling you otherwise. What makes it worth the effort is the view across the Mawddach Valley - on a clear day you can see right across to Cader Idris, and the surrounding ridges fold away in that particular shade of green you only get in North Wales when the light's just right. Allow an hour up and forty minutes back down. The terrain's rocky in places and can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter here. It's not a walk for toddlers or the very unfit, but teenagers and competent family groups will find it manageable and genuinely satisfying. There's no facilities on the peak itself - bring water and pack your own lunch if you want to sit up there. Start early to avoid the afternoon mist rolling in, and weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends. If you're staying at Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park just outside Dolgellau, you're perfectly positioned - it's only a fifteen-minute drive to the trailhead. Torrent Walk Campsite works too, though it's slightly further out. The walk fits well into a broader Snowdonia touring holiday, especially if you're doing the valley walks and lower-level trails elsewhere. It's a cracking spot if you want something with a bit of grunt to it.
