Fenn's, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve

Three separate mosaics strung together across the Shropshire-Wales border, Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield is one of the largest lowland raised bog complexes left in Britain. It's proper wild country - spongy underfoot, dizzyingly open, and frankly a bit eerie when the mist rolls in.

Walking the boardwalks (there are a few dotted about) you're genuinely on an ancient wetland. The ground squelches. Bog rosemary and sundews cling to the peat. It's the kind of place where you stop seeing people after about ten minutes and remember why you came to Shropshire in the first place. Birdwatchers know it well - hen harriers, curlews, snipe - but you don't need binoculars to feel the quiet here.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper walk. Shorter strolls are fine too. It's free, naturally, and there are a few car parks dotted around each section. Best in spring or autumn when the light's low and the water levels are interesting. Summer can be a bit dry and insecty.

Based near Whitchurch, you're well-positioned for combining this with other walking spots in the area. Lower Lacon Caravan Park and the better-rated Bramblewood are both within easy driving distance if you're staying put. Families with younger kids might find the boardwalks limiting - it's not a "things to do" sort of place, more a "stand quietly and listen" sort. Walkers and nature types will get the most from it.
