Feather Tor

The walk up Feather Tor takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Tavistock, and it's one of those Devon granite outcrops that rewards you properly once you're standing on top. The tor itself isn't massive - you're only looking at around 1,400 feet - but the views across Dartmoor are genuinely worth the climb. Clear days are best; I've been up there when the mist rolled in thick and you could barely see your feet.

It's a straightforward enough walk for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the scramble to the summit a bit fiddly. The real appeal is the sense of exposure - you feel properly on top of something out here, not just standing on a hill. The moorland around it is open and often windy, so bring a jacket even when it looks calm in town.

If you're staying at Langstone Manor just down the road, this makes an easy half-day outing. Pair it with a potter around Tavistock itself - the town's got character, proper cafes, and you won't feel like you've driven an hour for a walk. The tor doesn't take long, so don't expect to spend your whole afternoon here, but it's exactly the kind of energetic break that works well between other Dartmoor activities. Free to walk, naturally. Go early if it's a weekend; parking's limited.
